Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about the Ontario Sunshine List
What is the Ontario Sunshine List?
The Ontario Sunshine List is an annual disclosure of public sector employees in Ontario, Canada who earn $100,000 or more per year. It was created in 1996 under the Public Sector Salary Disclosure Act to promote transparency and accountability in government spending.
Who is included in the Sunshine List?
The list includes employees from municipalities, school boards, universities, colleges, hospitals, crown agencies, and other public sector organizations in Ontario who earned $100,000 or more in the previous calendar year. This includes salary and taxable benefits.
How many people are on the Sunshine List?
As of 2024, there are approximately 244,000 public sector employees on the Ontario Sunshine List. The number has grown significantly since 1996 when only 4,800 employees were listed, primarily due to inflation and salary increases.
How do I search for someone on the Sunshine List?
You can search by employee name, employer name, job title, sector, or year using our search tool. Enter the person's first or last name in the search box, and filter by sector (e.g., universities, hospitals) or year (1996-2024) to narrow results.
What information is shown for each employee?
For each employee, the list shows their full name, employer, job title, sector, salary, taxable benefits, and total compensation for that year. Historical data from 1996 to 2024 is available for most employees.
Why hasn't the $100,000 threshold changed since 1996?
The $100,000 threshold has remained unchanged since the act was introduced in 1996. Due to inflation, this amount would be equivalent to approximately $180,000 in 2024 dollars, which is why the number of people on the list has grown dramatically.
Which sectors have the highest salaries?
Universities and colleges typically have the highest average salaries, followed by hospitals and boards of public health, crown agencies, and municipalities. University presidents, hospital CEOs, and senior administrators often earn the highest compensation.
How is total compensation calculated?
Total compensation is the sum of salary and taxable benefits. Taxable benefits may include items like housing allowances, vehicle allowances, life insurance premiums, and other non-cash compensation that is considered taxable income.
When is the Sunshine List released each year?
The Ontario government typically releases the Sunshine List in late March or early April each year, covering salaries from the previous calendar year. For example, the 2024 list (covering 2023 salaries) was released in March 2024.
Can I download the Sunshine List data?
Yes, you can export search results and comparison data as CSV files for offline analysis. Premium users have unlimited export capabilities, while free users can export limited results.
How accurate is the Sunshine List data?
The data comes directly from the Ontario government's Public Sector Salary Disclosure database and is considered highly accurate. Organizations are legally required to report this information under the Public Sector Salary Disclosure Act.
Why do some employees appear multiple times?
Employees may appear multiple times if they worked for different employers in the same year, changed positions mid-year, or if their salary data was reported separately for different roles or time periods.
